KOFFLER GALLERY, KOFFLER CENTRE OF THE ARTS
Iris Häussler: Honest Threads
January 22 to March 8, 2009
Curated by Mona Filip

As the first project in the Koffler Gallery’s new off-site program, Häussler’s installation engages the GTA public in sharing real life stories at Toronto’s famous landmark, Honest Ed’s. Honest Threads displays garments and the memories they carry. Lent by Torontonians, each item holds a personal story revealing a glimpse of the many threads that weave our identity over time. Visitors are able to borrow the garments and wear them for a few days, experiencing both literally and psychologically what it is like to “walk in someone else’s shoes.” At the same time, they add new layers to the clothes’ history. Trading experiences on both tactile and narrative levels enriches our collective perception of the place we call home. As pieces of a vast puzzle, these individual stories render a fragmentary portrait of the city, attesting to its complex history.

BLACKWOOD GALLERY, UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO MISSISSAUGA
The Way I Are
January 21 to March 1, 2009
Curated by Katie Bethune-Leamen

Using the title of a Timbaland song as a point of departure, verbal slang is proposed as means through which to consider translations and modulations of visual imagery within various art practices. Featuring works by Valérie Blass, Anthony Burnham, Robert Fones, Martin Golland, Jen Hutton, Kelly Jazvac, John Massey, Elizabeth McIntosh, Planningtorock and Tony Romano.
Locations: Blackwood Gallery (Kaneff Centre) and eGallery (CCT Building)

ART GALLERY OF YORK UNIVERSITY
Daniel Borins + Jennifer Marman
Bustin’ Out There!
January 28 to March 29, 2009

On Wednesday, January 28, 2009 the ‘mischievous’ Toronto collaborative team of Daniel Borins and Jennifer Marman open Project for a New American Century, a ‘what if’ scenario in the form of an installation specially commissioned for the Art Gallery of York University that combines architecture, painting, and sculpture. Building a monolithic prison-like enclosure in the AGYU’s first gallery-a ‘psychotechnic’ torture cell that in part references those operated by anti-Franco anarchists during the Spanish Civil War but clad in Utopian Brutalist motif (like that found at York University, in fact)- the artists establish a historical conjecture from which they then play out the aesthetic possibilities or consequences of this proposition with a series of paintings and sculptures in the second gallery. The exhibition runs until March 29, 2009 (at which time the prison will self destruct and the artists will be set free).

DORIS MCCARTHY GALLERY, UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO SCARBOROUGH
ImagiNation: New Cultural Topographies
January 14 to March 1, 2009
Curated by Ming Tiampo, Nicole Neufeld and Caroline Vanderloo
Organized and circulated by Carleton University Art Gallery

ImagiNation features a diverse range of contemporary Canadian artists whose works express some of the complexities of Canadian identity. Critically and creatively re-imagining the cultural intersections that affect the everyday lives of all Canadians, the artists’ varied perspectives on such themes as memory, collectivity and mobility address the consequences of our shrinking world. Featuring works by Lucie Chan, Jamelie Hassan, Frank Shebageget, Henry Tsang and Jin-me Yoon.
